Hewlett Packard was among the first and remains a dominant name in jet ink printing machines. There are two approaches to jet ink printing machine and replacement print cartridge design: ink jet print cartridges that contain their own printhead element or ink jet print cartridges where the printhead element is part of the jet ink printing machine itself and therefore the replacement print cartridges act solely as ink jet ink containers. Hewlett Packard has, with very few exceptions, chosen the first solution where the printhead element and ink jet print cartridge are one. To a user this means that their HP ink jet print cartridges are more expensive. On the other hand, since most of the ‘intelligence’ that controls the printing machine is in the replacement print cartridge, there is a lower probability of maintenance issues affecting the printing machine itself.
